MAYVILLE, MI. (WJRT) – Political turmoil in the small community of Mayville, as two candidates who won races in the election are not sworn into office.
The village management says the two people owed money to the village and their vote totals don’t count.
Two people that finished last in their respective races were actually sworn in.
We, the media, attend swearing-in ceremonies from time to time for public officials and we are always welcome.
That was not the case today in Mayville.
Bill Barkowska was ushered into the Mayville Village Hall by police chief Louis Cook to be sworn in after winning a trustee spot on the village council, a swearing in ceremony where our cameras were not allowed.
This comes after the village went to court to keep Barkowska and four other people off the ballot, mainly due to unpaid FOIA bills.
