Laurens District 56 confirms student data compromised after PowerSchool breach [Video]

LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Laurens County School District 56 confirmed that student data was compromised after a cybersecurity breach of PowerSchool affected multiple states and school districts.

South Carolina Department of Education officials confirmed on Jan. 7 that a breach resulted in unauthorized access to certain customer data from PowerSchool’s Student Information Systems (SIS), including data from multiple states and school districts across the country.

Officials with Laurens County School District 56 confirmed on Wednesday in a letter to parents that some student data was compromised.

The state does not believe any student social security numbers were compromised due to a double encryption method used by District 56, officials said.

According to officials, PowerSchool said the data that was mainly taken included parent and student contact information such as name and address information.
