Latinos Connect host Mexican Independence Day celebration | News [Video]

(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Latinos Connect invited the community to participate in the experience of the celebration of Mexican Independence Day, which is one of the most important events in Mexican culture.

Mexican Independence Day commemorates when Priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called on Mexicans to rise up against the government of Spain. It is otherwise known as “Grito de Independencia,” which translates to “Cry of Independence.” Father Hidalgo’s famous “Grito” battle cry was a powerful speech for the people behind the movement.

Marcela Villaseñor Hamilton, founder of Mexi-Mix community, said Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th.

“We are celebrating because I think it’s very important for us to share more about our history, about our backgrounds and also invited all the people who can to share this part of the traditions, to share who we are,” Villaseñor Hamilton said.
