Labor minister Murray Watt makes Australia Day date blunder live on air after poll showing majority support for keeping January 26 [Video]

Albanese minister Murray Watt appeared to throw government support behind changing the date of Australia Day on Sunrise on Monday, before quickly correcting himself.

The Minister for Support and Workplace Relations appeared on the breakfast show, where he was quizzed on a new poll showing majority support for keeping January 26 as the date for the national day.

The Institute of Public Affairs’ annual poll of attitudes towards Australia Day found that 69 per cent of Australians agreed with the statement, “Australia Day should be celebrated on January 26”, The Daily Telegraph reported on Monday.

Support was up six points from 2023, when 63 per cent supported the same statement. The Institute said support for the date was up in every age bracket, including the 18-24 age group.
