Kuskokwim 300 postponed to February due to unsafe trail, continued warm temps [Video]

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The Kuskokwim 300 sled dog race has been postponed for two weeks, according to race officials.

The sled dog race, one year removed from filling all 30 race spots, will now start Feb. 7 instead of Jan. 24.

In an interview Thursday, race manager Paul Basile said that the decision to move the race back was in part due to helping mushers and their teams avoid a costly trip to Bethel.

“We’ve just been really challenged in terms of being able to mark a trail, being able to determine where a safe trail would be,” explained Basile.

“And the forecast for the upcoming week is is another round of really warm weather on the high 30s into the 40s, right up until two days before the planned race start.”

Basile said that he hopes the two-week delay provides for better mushing conditions, but added they really only need about an inch of snow to run on the Kuskokwim …
