After a stolen vehicle crashed into the family’s home, they received a city notice threatening $2,000 in daily fines – a letter officials now say was sent in error.

KILLEEN, Texas — A disabled veteran and his wife are finding support from their community after a police chase ended with a car crashing through their home, only to then receive a warning letter from the city threatening thousands in daily fines.

David Contreras and his wife were taking an afternoon nap when a juvenile in a stolen vehicle plowed through their living room wall during a police pursuit. Just 30 minutes earlier, they had been sitting in that exact spot.

“We could have been killed,” Contreras said. “God was looking out for us because 30 minutes makes a big difference.”
