K-9 no longer ‘in service’ following incident, Georgetown police investigating [Video]

UPDATE: August 7 at 1:51 p.m.

In a press release published by the Georgetown Police Department, it was confirmed that K-9 Rex was euthanized following an incident in which Rex bit a family member of its handler.

In response to reports of K-9 Rex biting its handler’s family member, GPD and a neighboring department sent officers, including four trained K-9 handlers, to remove Rex from the premises. In doing so, Rex became aggressive to a handler, biting him and, “despite efforts to deescalate the situation, K-9 Rex’s aggression escalated.”

After Rex was pinned by the handler, Rex maintained a strong bite and failed to respond to commands.

“In the interest of the life and safety of the officer, the difficult decision was made to euthanize K-9 Rex,” the release states.

According to the release, GPD considers this to be a “critical incident” and considers K-9 Rex as a valued partner whose loss is felt by all.
