Proactive’s Tylah Tully breaks down ‘Just the Facts’ of the latest news from Australian Vanadium Ltd (ASX: AVL, OTCQB: ATVVF).
Through its subsidiary VSUN Energy, Australian Vanadium is advancing Project Lumina, a modular and scalable utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) using vanadium flow battery (VFB) technology.
The project targets medium-to-long-duration energy storage solutions for Australian energy markets.
Key appointments include Genus for power conversion and transformer systems, Sedgman for vanadium electrolyte storage and integration, and CellCube for technical expertise and power units. These partners bring expertise from high-profile projects, such as WA’s Kwinana lithium-ion BESS.
Project Lumina has progressed to Phase 2, refining assumptions from Phase 1, which demonstrated competitive levelised costs of storage at A$274/MWh for four-hour and A$251/MWh for eight-hour configurations.
Phase 2 focuses on finalising 100MW system designs, optimising a “deconstructed” BESS model for extended lifespans beyond 40 years, and engaging energy offtakers, securing land and evaluating funding strategies.
VSUN Energy highlights the importance of these partnerships in advancing utility-scale energy storage solutions, positioning Project Lumina as a leader in the renewable energy transition across Australia.
