Why is it harder than ever to keep up with the speed of trends? And what are the pressures marketers face to stay current, without jumping on short-lived fads?

From ‘brat’ to ‘mob wife aesthetic’ to the ‘very demure, very mindful’ videos, 2024 rolled through its fair share of fads. That’s because trends are growing 4.4x faster and they’re dropping off 14 times faster, too – meaning they’re reaching their peak and eventual decline faster than ever.

For consumers, that means there’s a fear of missing out (FOMO) and an “exhausting” pressure to be up to speed with the latest must-have, says Sydney Stanback, global insights and trends lead, Pinterest: “And then, from a business standpoint, how do you plan?” Because trying to keep up with the competition by jumping on every trend will risk diluting a brand’s identity.
