July is Disability Pride Month [Video]

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Not that long ago, Frank Russell struggled to connect with people. He was introverted, withdrawn, and uncomfortable talking with others.

But as Frank got more deeply involved with Special Olympics Florida, his father began to see a transformation. Frank grew more confident and capable. He began to take on leadership roles, becoming and Athlete Leader and Health Messenger.

“He’s doing public speaking; he’s winning all kinds of awards,” his dad says. “He’s done everything. Things we never dreamed he would do.”

A multi-sport athlete, Frank competed in open-water swim and won a gold medal in triathlon at the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games. Joining the Athlete Leadership program, Frank said, “changed everything.”

“I will show how everyone with any form of disability can change the world for the better!”
