Prayers are in order as sad news has been reported that acclaimed dancer, choreographer and Artistic Director of the historically famous, Alvin Ailey Company, Judith Jamison, has passed away at the age of 81.

On Saturday Philadelphia native Judith Jamison passed away at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center came after a brief illness, said Christopher Zunner, managing director of public relations at the dance company.

In 1971, Judith Jamison premiered “Cry,” a 17-minute solo that Ailey dedicated “to all Black women everywhere—especially our mothers,” and which became a signature of the company, according to its website.   Jamison performed on Broadway and formed her own dance company before returning to serve as artistic director for the Ailey troupe from 1989 to 2011.

We will be keeping the family, friends and colleagues of Judith Jamison uplifted in our prayers.
