JSU receives grant to preserve historic hospital [Video]

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – The Zachary T. Hubert Health Center at Jackson State University received a $198,564 grant from the National Park Service to preserve the building.

The money will go towards a new roof and a new HVAC System. Jackson State University’s Community Engagement Director, Heather Denne, believes the money will not only preserve the building itself, but the history behind it.

“Jackson State played a pivotal role in access to healthcare during a time when African Americans could not access healthcare,” said Denne.

Former Jackson State president, Zachary T. Hubert opened the hospital to offer healthcare services for African Americans when other hospitals in the area were still segregated.

Angela Stewart is an archivist for the Margaret Walker Center at JSU and spoke about the value of the historic hospital.
