WASHINGTON — President Jimmy Carter’s environmental legacy is an often-overlooked portion of his presidency. His support of environmental causes was rooted in his love of the outdoors, his faith, and his experience growing up on a farm.
A young Carter was raised in a small farming community in western Georgia. There he worked with his father, their sharecroppers, and spent free time fishing and hunting in the nearby woods.
His love the outdoors followed him into adulthood. As a Georgia State Senator, Carter was a Charter member of the Georgia Conservancy, an organization dedicated to the protection and conservation of the natural places in the Peach State.
During his time as Governor of Georgia, Carter established a trust to identify and protect several river basins and wilderness areas in the state. While in the White House, Carter continued this work. …
