Something is stirring in Virginia here at the end of this 2024 presidential election. Both presidential campaigns show activity in the commonwealth. Former President Donald Trump is finishing his campaign with a rally in Salem. Vice President Kamala Harris is shifting television and radio advertising to Virginia stations. Why? Is Virginia “in play” in this election?

Early voting in Virginia may be revealing some surprises. There are 1,692,388 Virginians who have voted early. Most of those votes are from senior citizens who often vote Republican. Democrats assert that younger voters often vote Democrat. Among the early voters, only 17% are under 40. Very young voters, thought to be more Democratic, are only 5.7% of the early votes. African Americans are reportedly deciding their vote on kitchen-table issues and their quality of life under the Biden-Harris administration.
