Japan trip teaches Lahaina students how to rebuild a year after the Maui wildfires | Devastation in Lahaina [Video]

The next generation of Maui learn valuable lessons from Japan’s 2011 tragedy focused on honoring culture and forging for the future. 11 juniors and seniors from Lahainaluna High School traveled to Japan in the TOMODACHI Kibou for Maui program to learn how they can rebuild their own community the impacts of last year’s wildfires.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (Island News) — Lahainaluna High School students traveled to Japan for the TOMODACHI Kibou for Maui program designed to teach them about culture and community rebuilding after last year’s wildfires.

The trip, organized by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, sent its first group of LHS students in March, and the second group of students recently returned from Higashimatsushima, Japan. The program sent 11 students who are juniors and seniors to learn how Japan rebuilt after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
