CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa farmers may be among the first to suffer if stiffer tariffs are imposed.
The global agricultural consulting firm called “World Agricultural Economic and Environmental Services” estimates soybean farmers across the U.S. could lose as much as $6 billion from higher tariffs against China alone, and corn farmers could face up to a billion and a half dollars in losses.
The firm is basing the costs on the US China trade war from 2018.
Linn County farmer John Airy is staying busy after the rush to get his crops harvested for the year.
But the profit from the corn and soybeans at his farm near Alburnett may be determined by actions in Washington and overseas.
“Moving soybeans is what’s gonna bring the price up. Getting them shipped on a boat and sending them somewhere so somebody can eat,” Airy said.
