Iowa City Community School District unveils potential cell phone policy [Video]

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa City Community School District will discuss a draft of new policy for cell phones in classrooms; the discussion comes as multiple school districts in Iowa have been implementing new restrictions because of the negative impacts cell phones can have.

If the district’s proposed plan moves forward it would go into effect starting January 21st.

During class time personal devices are not to be seen, heard or used. Those personal devices include phones, but also refer to things like headphones or earbuds.

“Phones, earbuds and headphones must remain detached from the body until the student leaves the classroom at the end of the class period,” reads the current draft of the policy.

Middle and high school students will be allowed to use their phones between classes and during their assigned lunch period. High schoolers will also be able to use them during open hours in designated areas, like a commons.
