Intel to shutter Shannon R&D site next year [Video]

Intel in Ireland has informed its research and development staff that it plans to close its site in Shannon.

Approximately 750 are employed by Intel in Shannon, and staff have been offered redundancy or early retirement options ahead of the planned closure next autumn.

Around 300 staff employed by Intel in Shannon work in the area, and many of them on a hybrid basis.

An Intel spokesperson said the company was shifting its global real estate strategy to “focus on fewer, more populated locations.

“We are still working through plans for each business unit,” they continued. “We will provide more detailed information in the coming months.”

Staff, laboratories and equipment may transfer from Shannon to the chipmaker’s campus in Leixlip, Co Kildare, or to international sites if they cannot be accommodated.
