THERE are calls from health bosses for helmets to be made mandatory for e-scooter users amid an increase in injuries.
Shock data has revealed that less than one in 10 people who present to hospitals as a result of an e-scooter collision or fall were wearing helmets.
The data was discovered in research by Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown Dublin.
The researchers have said e-scooter injuries have added to increased numbers of people presenting to A&E as the popularity of the transport mode increases.
The study showed a nearly quadruple increase to patients presenting at the hospital with e-scooter related injuries since 2020.
76 people presented with a traumatic injury over a 13-month period to July 2024.
From June 2019 to July 2022, only 22 patients had presented with similar injuries.
