Kwanzaa is celebrated every year from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.
INDIANAPOLIS — With the Kwanzaa holiday set to kick off next week, a local organization set up an event to help the Indianapolis community learn more about the holiday’s history and meaning.
Washington Park, on the near northeast side of Indianapolis, hosted a Kwanzaa storytelling event on Saturday, Dec. 21.
The holiday is a celebration of African-American culture and is based on harvest festival traditions in parts of Africa. The event’s organizers said they want to spread understanding of all of cultures and backgrounds that make up the Indianapolis community.
“We need to be supportive of each other,” said storyteller Portia Sholar Jackson. “We need to do more things that bring us together so we can share our differences and appreciate how we can come together and appreciate that we come from different places and different walks.”
