MAUI, Hawai’i (Island News) — Activists have been publicizing through social media a highly-awaited meeting on Tuesday evening for a controversial housing proposal in South Maui.

The Makena Mauka project would involve up to 900 units, up to 100 of them being affordable, on about 1,000 acres of land.

Dozens of residents are expected to attend a meeting to discuss a controversial housing proposal on Maui. A Housing advocate and county councilmember emphasize the county is still in crisis mode when it comes to affordable housing – only exacerbated by the wildfires – but they say they are dedicated to thinking of more ways to create more affordable options.

In light of the forum discussing one of the largest developments in Maui County, affordable housing advocate Stan Franco weighed in on Maui’s housing woes.

“Without housing, we’re losing our people, they’re going to the mainland,” Franco said.
