PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — Improved access to some cancer screenings is coming to rural areas of Northwest Florida as the state awarded funding to the University of West Florida.

According to a press release, Gov. Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis awarded the university $895,905.60 from the Cancer Innovation Research Fund to support innovative cancer research.

The university said it will use the funding for the Northwest Florida Public Health Collaborative to Reduce Breast Cancer Disparities project. The project, managed by Usha Kundu College of Health Professor Dr. Justice Mbizo, will disseminate health information relating to breast cancer and tobacco smoking cessation and offer mobile mammogram screenings.
