I-TEAM follow: PURA denies gas utility request for costs barred by state law [Video]

HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – Earlier this year, the I-Team started digging deeper into the SCG/CNG gas rate cases, and found Avangrid (their parent company) was asking for more than a million dollars in items that state law banned.

The law prohibits electric distribution, gas pipeline, or water companies from recovering costs associated with trade associations, lobbying, legislative action, advertising, marketing, and board of directors or officers travel, lodging, or food.

But Avangrid asked for some of those items anyway, and PURA denied some of the costs on Monday.

Between CNG and SCG, documents showed Avangrid asked for around $1.2 million dollars in prohibited costs when they first filed their request.

Their requests included thousands in board of director costs to travel and eat, thousands in investor relations fees and more.

PURA denied more than $617,000 – 51% of that request – saying state law bars Avangrid from recovering that money.
