GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The ground of the Michigan Veterans Home at Grand Rapids was filled with hundreds of people taking part in a 5-mile run honoring veterans.
Event organizers say 220 people preregistered for the 5-mile run, 5K and 0.5-mile walk/roll, which brought together families, veterans and community members.
Retreat offers sanctuary, escape for veterans
The 5-mile trail took runners along the Grand River and through part of the veterans’ cemetery. Some runners carried American flags through the route in honor of those who served.
“This Veterans Day 5 gives us an opportunity to celebrate service and also bring community together for camaraderie and connect the broader community that might not otherwise be connected with those who wore the uniform,” said Ryan Engle, director of development for Michigan Veteran Homes.
