SHAWNEE, Kan. (KCTV) – The Shawnee Mission Northwest community is in mourning after 15-year-old Ovet Gomez-Regalado passed away on Friday.
Shawnee Mission School District says Gomez-Regalado had a “medical incident” at an offseason workout on Wednesday. 911 was called and took the high school sophomore to the hospital, where he died two days later.
Saturday afternoon, students at Shawnee Mission Northwest organized a vigil to honor the life of their fallen classmate. Hundreds of people showed up at the high school’s football field for the event.
“It made peace in my heart to know that a lot of people loved him,” said Zion Scott, a friend of Gomez-Regalado.
Shawnee Mission Northwest’s main school color is orange, but many balloons at the event were green – a tribute to Ovet’s favorite color. His friends remembered a life gone too soon.
“In the hallways, you would always see a smile on his face,” Scott said.
