CHICO, Calif. – Hundreds of people celebrated Juneteenth at DeGarmo Park on Wednesday.
Juneteenth commemorates the day black slaves in America were finally freed on this day back in 1865, a piece of history worth celebrating.
The celebration was at DeGarmo Park and was from noon to 6 p.m.
Action News Now spoke with Vince Haynie, who says he likes to take today to remember his ancestors and the positive contributions black people had in our country.
“You got to realize that group of people our ancestors came from somewhere before they were in the United States and they had rich treasures and rich gifts inside of them, and I think you can see that just in us today with gifts and talents,” Haynie said.
The local organization BLACC, which stands for Building Leaders, Advocates, and Community Connections, hosted Wednesday’s celebration.
