How Comstock schools are using safety grant [Video]

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Comstock Public Schools was awarded a half-million-dollar grant this week from a Michigan-based public safety company.

In a letter sent home to families Tuesday, CPS shared the news, saying it will “implement state-of-the-art weapons detections systems across [its] schools.”

“It’s not like an X-ray or anything like that … The artificial intelligence can scan how somebody appears, when they walk through (a hall or doorway), and then can detect whether or not they have some type of gun,” said Superintendent Jeffrey Thoenes.

The grant comes after the district experienced a shooting outside of its high school last December. While no one was hurt after 30 gunshots were fired, the incident served as a reminder to the community just how important campus safety is.

“Schools aren’t fortresses. You do the best you can, but you always prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” Thoenes said.
