Historic marker to be unveiled for Monroe County school | News [Video]

A historic marker has been placed in Monroe County for a school that no longer stands.

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) – A historic marker has been placed in Monroe County for a school that no longer stands.

The marker honors the Higgason Rosenwald School in Monroe County, where African American students were educated from 1927 to 1960.

The marker is being put up by the Monroe County Rosenwald Schools Initiative Partnership.

They are partnering with Prairie Rural Community Development Club, Amory Regional Museum, and Monroe County Historical Society.

The marker is to also honor those who were educated at the school.

“There was a school built in Tuskegee and it was six schools,” said Vyllorya Andrette Evans, with the Monroe County Rosenwald School Initiative. “Those six schools turned into 5,000 schools and the impact upon the African Americans of those schools is just amazing.”
