Initially starting his career in the military in 1981 when he was commissioned into the Parachute Regiment of the 3rd Battalion, where he was made platoon commander. By 1997, Jonathan had been appointed Commanding Officer of 2nd Battalion. During his time in the Parachute Regiment, he was commissioned to fight wars in the Falklands, Kosovo and Iraq.
