The 128-year-old bridge was closed as a precaution after an inspection uncovered minor issues that need addressing, Cumberland County officials said.
CARLISLE, Pa. — A historic Cumberland County bridge has been closed to traffic after an inspection revealed “minor issues” that require further investigation, county officials said Wednesday.
The 128-year-old Hertzler Bridge in Carlisle was closed on Wednesday, the county’s communications office said in a press release. The county’s bridge engineer Herbert, Rowland & Grubic is working with PennDOT to develop a solution to repair and reopen the bridge later this year, officials said.
In the meantime, a detour will be put in place shortly, officials added.
The historic steel truss bridge on Creek Road spans 216 feet and crosses the Conodoguinet Creek in West Pennsboro and Lower Frankford Townships. The bridge sees an average daily traffic rate of 460 vehicles and is weight posted to eight tons.
