Hampton Roads Transit increases security measures [Video]

NORFOLK, Va. — Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) on Monday announced there will be an increase in transit security and awareness.

In an effort to ensure safety while commuters return to work after the holidays, HRT is adding enhanced security on all transits, including The Tide light rail and its 11 stations in Norfolk, according to a press release from Communications Manager Thomas Becher.

The new security measures will complement the patrols and closed-circuit video monitoring already being performed, Becher said.

This new systemwide change is a preventive measure. “This was not in response to any specific threats or issues,” Becher said. “Just a reminder that HRT takes safety and security seriously.”

Officials advise riders to call 911 if they see any suspicious behavior while in transit.
