A 74-year-old Crete man has been identified as the gunman in a Friday shooting that injured seven people, including four children, the Nebraska State Patrol said.
Crete police say they are investigating whether the crime may have been racially motivated based on a previous report of an incident between the man, who fatally shot himself, and the victims.
Billy Booth was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before law enforcement made contact with him, Col. John Bolduc with the State Patrol said during a press conference Saturday. All victims, the youngest of whom is 3 years old, are expected to survive.
The State Patrol said Booth began firing his shotgun at around 4:35 p.m. Friday from inside his home near Parklane Street and Crestline Drive toward a group of about 15 people gathered across the street.
Most of the victims were in the yard, but at least one victim was struck while inside a home on Crestline Drive.
