Guilford County Schools welcomes students back for the 2024-25 school year on Monday.The third largest school district in the state provided an update on staffing, security and construction ahead of the first day.Staffing shortages will potentially cause bus delays GCS is facing a big challenge when it comes to getting students to school.In her State of the School System address, Guilford County Schools Superintendent Whitney Oakley said the school system has about 56 bus driver vacancies. That is about the same number they had last school year.As drivers are hired, Oakley said routes will be adjusted to operate more efficiently. There are staggered start times for elementary, middle and high schools, so drivers can run multiple routes in one day.The school system will also enforce walk zones. These are areas around a school that are considered walkable to school. Students that live within these zones will not be offered transportation. …
