TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – To mark Veterans Day, the U.S. Department of Housing and Development and Veterans Affairs announced that veteran homelessness is at an all-time low.
Based on the annual Point in Time count taken between January 2023 and January 2024, the number of veterans facing any form of homelessness dropped 7.5% since last year.
But while the numbers are showing progress, many in our community said there is still work to be done.
“It’s so important that we serve our veterans because they’ve served us,” said Suzanne Bond, Esperanza CEO.
Daniel Jones served in the Navy for six years. Now he is a resident and in charge of maintenance at Esperanza.
But for a time he was homeless.
“And leaving blind rehab, I was homeless, and the people at blind rehab helped bring me here, to this place, and when I came here, they just opened their arms up,” Jones said.
