Gretna East student petitions for a longer winter break [Video]

GRENTA, Neb. (WOWT) – Christmas break is a time of the year kids always look forward to but for some, it isn’t long enough.

One Gretna East student started a petition to change his break, creating a ripple effect in his community.

This year, students at Gretna Public Schools have 10 days off for Christmas break. It’s one day more than last and in line with the rest of the districts in the Omaha Metro.

Sophomore Nicholas Mitchell thought he and his peers deserved more days off.

“Originally it wasn’t meant to be a big idea,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell said it all started while he was talking with his friends one day in class.

He said a Christmas break extension would have allowed people who have family out of town or are going on a trip to have more time to travel.
