Greensboro officers head to Asheville to help with Helene relief [Video]

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — The Greensboro Police Department has answered the call from the Asheville Police Department to send in reinforcements.

The call came in at 8 p.m. Saturday, Less than 16 hours later, dozens of officers hit the road westward.

“It’s anticipated that these officers will be there for the next five to seven days,” GPD Chief John Thompson said.

36 Greensboro officers got on the road to Asheville Sunday afternoon.

“When something like this happens, they are able to drop everything that they’re doing with the support of the police department and the City of Greensboro and go help another community,” Thompson said.

Within ten minutes, the emails from officers volunteering to go were pouring in, according to Lieutenant H.J. Velez.

“It’s amazing. Most of the whole department wanted to go,” Velez said.
