DENVER, Colo. (KKTV) – Representative Yara Zokaie spoke with many families across the state about their grocery bills over the years. According to an FTC study, some stores are marking up the prices even further than inflation.

“When we see bad actors hide behind inflation hide behind market, disruptions, and use that as an excuse to unconsciously raise prices to an unfair extent just to line their own pockets,” Zokaie said.

According to the FTC study, grocery store markups peaked in 2023.

“There’s a lot of research that’s been done on this to show the rising cost. Do not just seem to be based on the market,” Zokaie said.

A bill introduced to Colorado lawmakers this week aims to ban price gouging in sales of necessities, which bill sponsor Representative Yara Zokaie defines as anything found in a grocery store.
