TULSA, Okla. — The Greater Tulsa Area African Affairs Commission hosted the first Black Educator Excellence Awards on Tuesday at the City Council Chambers at City Hall downtown.
The award is named after Dr. La Verne Ford Wimberly, a retired educator and administrator who worked at Tulsa Public Schools for 39 years.
Individuals were nominated by their principles and selected by the Commission for their outstanding contributions as educators, dedication to their community, and their leadership.
“The Black Educator Excellence award is significant for two reasons,” said Dr. Dewayne Dickens, Chair of the African American Affairs Commission. “First, the naming of the award after Dr. La Verne Wimberly speaks to the longtime excellence and contributions of African Americans within Tulsa. Second, honoring the excellence of four African American educators today allows us to thank them for the role modeling they continue to provide today as they inspire students of all races, genders, and backgrounds. …
