Graymont School property to be redeveloped into affordable housing [Video]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – More housing options are coming to the Smithfield community.

The Birmingham City Council approved a ground lease agreement Tuesday to repurpose the former Graymont School property on 8th Avenue West into affordable housing for seniors.

The mayor and the developers spoke in front of the city council explaining their vision and Mayor Woodfin said the project will help with neighborhood growth and revitalization.

There will be 101 affordable housing units in the new development and they will be available to those making 80% percent of the area median income, which would be below $32,000 for a single tenant.

Within the agreement, the city will provide $3.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding to make the project feasible.

Councilor JT Moore said this project redevelops a historic property while putting roofs over the heads of our elderly neighbors. President Darrell O’Quinn echoing a similar sentiment.
