TULSA, Okla. — When you drive under the underpass of I-244 and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, you may notice it looks a little different.
There’s a mural that’s part of a collaboration between the Oklahoma Arts Alliance and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
There will be six pieces installed on underpasses of I-244 honoring the history of Tulsa’s Greenwood District.
“For me, it was a great way to pay homage to the folks who brought us this far as a community and it’s a great way for us to learn from their accomplishments and carry that torch forward,” said Autumn Brown, a project liaison.
Brown worked with artists Joel Daniel Phillips and Alexander Damahn for three years, creating a plan for this mural. It is a series of portraits featuring influential people from north Tulsa.
“They’re historical figures who have helped shape the democracy here in Tulsa,” Brown said.
