Gas leak contained at Chesapeake shopping center, businesses still closed due to damages [Video]

Businesses were evacuated Saturday night after a car struck and destroyed a gas meter at the Stonebridge Plaza.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — People were asked to avoid Stonebridge Plaza Shopping Center in Chesapeake due to a gas leak Saturday night.

The Chesapeake Fire Department was called to the shopping center at 8:50 p.m. after receiving multiple reports that a gas meter was struck and destroyed by a vehicle, according to a press release from the fire department.

Chesapeake Engine 12 and mutual aid units from Portsmouth and Suffolk evacuated all of the businesses in the shopping center, as they were unable to stop the gas leak due to the meter being destroyed.

Firefighters took preventive measures and monitored surrounding residences and businesses to ensure they were not in any immediate danger, the press release stated.

Columbia Gas Company along with firefighters worked together and secured the leak at 10:25 p.m.
