From Landfill to Solar Farm: The Latest Sun-Powered Zone in Frankfort | Focus Economy [Video]

FRANKFORT, N.Y. — The former Mohawk Valley landfill, visible from Rt. 5S in Frankfort, has now been transformed into the area’s latest solar farm.

On Tuesday morning, officials in Herkimer County celebrated the opening of the 6.4 megawatt Warrior Solar Farm, operated by EDF Renewables.

This project is part of a larger initiative aimed at developing community solar resources in the area, involving CleanCapital, Waste Management and the Herkimer County IDA.

It will supply clean energy to low-income subscribers through National Grid’s expanded Solar for All Program, which provides income-qualified customers with a 20% discount on their utility bills.

Paul Curran, chief development officer of Clean Capital, said, “This is enough power to supply about 600 average homes. So, it’s a significant-sized project, and most importantly, it’s built here at a piece of land that’s a landfill. It’s where garbage was dumped over many generations, and we’re just reusing that, …
