Former Oak Harbor middle school to be demolished; property developer opposes [Video]

OAK HARBOR, Ohio — A century-old landmark in downtown Oak Harbor faces an uncertain future, as plans to tear down the former middle school building have stirred strong emotions in the community.

The building, built in 1911, has been a staple of the village for over 100 years. However, officials of the Benton-Carroll-Salem Local School District say demolishing the structure is the most financially responsible decision.

However, local property developer Mel McCord disagrees. During a Monday evening village council meeting, he said the district is wasting valuable resources.

“If you tear that building down, you have 15 rows of housing. What do you have to offer?” McCord said.

McCord believes the building has untapped potential and proposes transforming it into something beneficial for the community.
