Former Kansas City mayor announces retirement from Park University, effective July 31 [Video]

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Kay Barnes, Kansas City’s first woman mayor, announced her retirement from Park University beginning on July 31.

Barnes served two terms as the mayor of Kansas City. Following, she joined park as the director of the Center for Leadership in May 2007.

Barnes has served Park University as the senior director for university engagement since 2018, representing the college within the Kansas City community. She was a staff liaison to Park’s Civic Advisory Council, which is a group of local business, civic and nonprofit leaders.

She has been an active participant in the school’s many public programs throughout her years there and in March, moderated a Women’s History Month alumni panel discussion.

In December 2006, Barnes delivered Park’s Commencement speech when she was mayor.
