First Alert Safety Check: Sioux Falls kidnapping inspires self-defense seminar [Video]

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – On September 19th, a 47-year-old woman was kidnapped in Sioux Falls. For many women in the area, this has created a sense of fear, but two community members are looking to change that.

According to the Sioux Falls Police Department, the victim was held against her will in a Sioux Falls apartment and taken to an area near Clear Lake Township in Minnehaha County. She was assaulted and four of her perpetrators have since been arrested.

Founder of The Empowerment Center Sydney Meza said women become afraid thinking they can’t defend themselves against an attacker who is bigger, faster or stronger than them.

“When in reality, there are such simple techniques that we can learn that even professional fighters, the best fighters in the world, learn. So, we’re teaching these techniques,” said Meza.

Even if you think you’re not athletic or strong enough to learn self-defense, Meza reassures that this allows you the best chance at gaining these skills.
