WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV/Gray News) – Videos captured what appeared to be a meteor shooting across the night sky in North Carolina overnight.

A video from Watauga County showed a reflection of the meteor as it passed over the Vilas area, near Boone, shortly after 1 a.m. Friday. In it, a ball of light could be seen flashing by, leaving behind a trail.

A separate clip shared by the same viewer showed a bright flash of light as the meteor went by.

Other videos posted on social media showed similar sights, with bright flashes ripping through the night sky.

People living in the area also reported hearing a loud boom. One person said it was so loud they thought the noise was blasting from highway construction.

In another social media post, a person shared a clip of the meteor zipping over Greeneville, Tenn., which is just over the state line.
