Federal funding approved to fix VFD [Video]

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The West Side Volunteer Fire Department is in need of an update.

Chief Chris Schilling said construction on the building started in 1952 and ended a couple years later. He’s ready to start making changes to the fire station, and after Wednesday’s Kanawha County Commission meeting, the VFD is getting the money to do so.

“It really feels good, I can spend, use money elsewhere, like I said buying equipment and buy more stuff and save the community money,” Schilling said.

This funding can help taxpayer money go toward new equipment instead of utilities, like when old windows let cold air inside.

The county commission approved $88,000 in federal funding to make changes.
