Farmers educating the community on annual Open Farm Day | News [Video]

BUCKSPORT — Over 100 Maine farms were open to visitors Sunday for the statewide Open Farm Day. 

This annual event is coordinated by Real Maine, a program of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry as a way to connect people with farmers. 

Farmers across the state invited people onto their land for the 35th year of this event, including the Loud Dog Farm that’s tucked away along the Orrington-Bucksport line. 

“The goal is to get the community involved, there’s a lot of farms that are looking for volunteers and new customers and clients,” said Owner of Loud Dog Farm, Patricia Mey. “We’re introducing people to American Heritage Breeds and small scale agriculture.” 

Local farmers say this event is a great chance to educate people and connect them with Maine’s agricultural community. 

“Probably the biggest problems that we’re facing right now is just a lack of education surrounding agriculture, so events like this are really important,” said Mey.
