Fairfield, Maine crash leaves Massachusetts man dead [Video]

Police said they believe speed and alcohol were factors.

STERLING, Massachusetts — Police believe speed and alcohol factored into two crashes in Fairfield on Sunday, the last of which resulted in the death of a Massachusetts man.

Ryan Sargent, 38, of Sterling, died at the scene of the second crash, Fairfield police said in a press release Sunday.

The first crash, a hit-and-run, happened shortly after 10:15 p.m. on Western Avenue, the release stated. The driver of the vehicle that had been struck told police a vehicle had veered into her lane and side-swiped her vehicle before continuing west in the wrong lane, officials said.

While officers were investigating the crash, another crash was reported in the area of 376 Center Road, about two miles from the hit-and-run, according to police. The responding officer identified the vehicle involved in the second crash as the suspected vehicle from the earlier hit-and-run, the release stated.
