Editor’s Note: The world is at a crossroads as artificial intelligence (AI) advances by leaps and bounds. How can we share our planet with one another and the AI systems we are creating in the best possible manner? How will the remarkable “educability” of the human brain empower us to set our planet on a steady course? In the edition of Leaders Talk, CMG’s Wang Guan sat down with British computer scientist & Turing Award recipient Leslie Valiant during his visit to China and asked provocative and intriguing questions about our future, knowledge, and our ability to deal with an ever-increasing stream of information. Valiant also tells Wang Guan that China’s love of scholarship is “a wonderful strength” as he believes that China has judiciously invested in mathematics, computer science, and basic sciences, a testament to the “Chinese traditional love of learning and mathematics.”
